Selected pickup city: São Vicente
São Vicente sits on Madeira's north coast at the base of the Encumeada pass, the main mountain crossing connecting the island's north and south, which makes it a natural stopping point rather than an endpoint for most itineraries. A car is essential given the terrain and distance from Funchal, and the town's volcanic caves are one of the more distinctive geological stops on the island. Weather here tends to be wetter and cooler than the south coast, a direct result of the mountains blocking moisture from crossing.
The São Vicente caves, lava tubes formed around 890,000 years ago, are open for guided walks and give a rare underground perspective on the volcanic forces that built the island. The town's centre, with a small church and a river running through it, is modest but pleasant for a short stop. The drive up to Encumeada pass itself, connecting to the south coast, offers some of the best mountain viewpoints on Madeira.
Porto Moniz is about 20 minutes west along the coastal road through tunnels. Ribeira Brava, on the south coast, is roughly 20 minutes via the Encumeada pass, a route that crosses the island's central mountain spine and changes climate noticeably along the way. Funchal is about 45 minutes to an hour depending on which route you take across the island.
The Encumeada pass road can be foggy, particularly in the afternoon, so mornings tend to offer clearer views if that's the priority. The caves have a fixed visiting schedule with guided groups, so check timing before planning a stop around them. This side of the island sees more rain than the south, so keep that in mind for both driving conditions and what to pack for the day.
