Selected pickup city: Machico
Machico, on Madeira's east coast, is where the Portuguese are traditionally said to have first landed on the island in the 15th century, and it sits close to the airport, making it a natural first or last stop on a Madeira trip. A car is useful for the short hop to the airport and for reaching the nearby Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, one of the driest and most exposed landscapes on an otherwise green island. The town itself has an easy, unhurried feel compared to Funchal.
Machico's own beach, partly sand and partly the island's usual volcanic pebble, sits right in town and is one of the more accessible swimming spots on this coast. Ponta de São Lourenço, a short drive further east, is a striking, almost lunar landscape of red and green volcanic rock with walking trails along the cliffs. The town's old fort and church reflect its history as one of Madeira's earliest settlements.
Madeira Airport is about ten minutes away, making Machico a practical base if your flight times are early or late. Funchal is roughly 25 minutes west along the coast road or expressway. Ponta de São Lourenço, at the island's easternmost tip, is a further 15 minutes past Machico on a road that gets progressively drier and more exposed.
Given the proximity to the airport, Machico works well for a first night after a late arrival rather than driving straight to Funchal in the dark on unfamiliar mountain roads. Ponta de São Lourenço's trail car park is small and can fill on weekends; arriving earlier in the day helps. Wind on the peninsula's exposed sections can be strong, worth factoring in if you're stopping the car near cliff edges.
