Destination guide

Santana, on Madeira's north coast, is known for its traditional triangular thatched houses, palheiros, painted in bright colours and still standing as a preserved example of how islanders lived before modern construction took over. A car is necessary here given the distance from Funchal and the winding roads through changing terrain to reach the north side of the island. The climate shifts noticeably once you cross the central mountains — wetter and greener than the drier south coast.

What to visit

The cluster of preserved thatched houses in the town centre, some open as small museums, gives a direct sense of Madeira's rural history before tourism reshaped the island's economy. Queimadas, a short drive into the hills above town, has one of the more accessible levada walks, following an old irrigation channel through laurel forest. The Achadas da Cruz cable car, a short drive further along the coast, descends steeply to an isolated agricultural plot at sea level, one of the more unusual short trips on the island.

Route ideas by car

Funchal is roughly an hour south, crossing through changing terrain and often changing weather along the way. Porto Moniz, at the island's northwestern tip, is about 40 minutes west along the coast road. São Vicente, with its volcanic caves, sits between the two and makes a natural stop on a longer north-coast loop.

Local rental tips

Weather on the north coast changes faster than on the drier south, so check conditions before setting out even on a day that looks clear in Funchal. The levada walk at Queimadas has limited parking that fills by mid-morning in high season. Roads here wind through forest and farmland with less signage than the main coastal routes, so a GPS with offline maps is worth having as backup.
