Selected pickup city: Calheta
Calheta sits on Madeira's west coast, one of the sunnier and drier corners of an island generally known for its microclimates, with an artificial sand beach that stands out on an island where most beaches are volcanic pebble. A car is close to essential here given how the coastal road winds through tunnels and along cliff edges connecting Calheta to the rest of the island. Banana plantations cover much of the terraced hillside inland from the coast road.
The artificial beach at Calheta, built with imported sand, is one of the few proper swimming beaches on Madeira and draws both locals and visitors for that reason. Ponta do Pargo, the westernmost point of the island, is a short drive further with a lighthouse and dramatic cliff views. The Casa das Mudas cultural centre, built into the hillside above town, is a striking piece of contemporary architecture worth a stop even briefly.
Porto Moniz and its natural volcanic pools are about 40 minutes further along the coast road, involving several tunnels cut through the cliffs. Funchal, the island capital, is roughly 45 minutes east via the modern expressway that runs along much of the south coast. Ribeira Brava, at the base of the road up to Encumeada pass, is a shorter 20-minute drive if you want to cross to the north side of the island.
Madeira's coastal roads involve frequent tunnels, some quite long and unlit beyond the entrance lighting, so headlights on is standard practice here regardless of time of day. The terrain is steep throughout the island, and automatic transmissions handle the gradients more comfortably than manuals for drivers unfamiliar with the roads. Fuel stations are less frequent on the western side of the island than around Funchal, so don't let the tank run too low before a day trip.
