Selected pickup city: Balaclava
Balaclava sits on the northwest coast between Port Louis and Grand Baie, home to a marine park protecting coral reefs just offshore and to the ruins of an old fort near the water. It's less built-up than the resort strip further north, with a working fishing village feel in places.
The Baie aux Tortues marine park is good for snorkeling if you bring or rent gear locally, and the nearby Aventure du Sucre museum, set on an old sugar estate, gives a sense of the industry that shaped this coast. Grand Baie's shops and restaurants are ten to fifteen minutes further north.
South toward Port Louis takes about twenty minutes along the coast road, useful for the Caudan Waterfront or the central market. North, the road continues to Grand Baie, Pereybère and eventually Cap Malheureux at the island's tip.
This stretch of coast road can flood briefly during heavy tropical downpours, so it's worth checking conditions rather than pushing through standing water. Parking near the marine park itself is informal — arrive early in high season to get a spot close to the shore.
