Is It Worth Renting a Car in Patong?
Patong Beach and Bangla Road's night market sit close enough to most hotels that a first evening in Phuket rarely calls for anything beyond a short walk or a quick songthaew ride.
Patong itself is a walk, and often a slow drive anyway
Traffic along the beach road backs up most evenings in high season, and scooters weave between cars closely enough that many visitors find walking or a short taxi faster than driving the same few blocks themselves.
Kata and Karon are close on the map but steep on the road
Kata and Karon, the next beaches south, look like a short hop on the map, but the connecting road climbs and switches back over a headland, and the drop-offs are steeper than they first appear. A car handles this comfortably; a scooter in the rain is a different story.
Two more things worth knowing
- The viewpoint between Kata and Karon gets crowded at sunset, and parking there is limited.
- These hill roads are the ones where Phuket's rainy-season downpours cause the most noticeable slowdowns.
The Big Buddha and the pier for Phi Phi pull in opposite directions
The Big Buddha sits on a hilltop inland, reachable by a paved but winding access road with panoramic views over the south of the island. The ferry pier for the Phi Phi Islands is a separate trip entirely — the boat covers the distance the car can't, and most visitors park near the pier for the day rather than trying to drive further.
Who should skip it, and the mistake worth avoiding
A short beach holiday confined to Patong itself, with no plans beyond the beach and Bangla Road, doesn't need a car.
The mistake is keeping the car in Patong overnight rather than using it only for day trips. Evening traffic and scarce parking near the beach road make it more practical for many visitors to park once at the hotel and rent only for the days heading south or inland.
Patong's beach and night market are for walking. A rental car earns its price on the hill road to Kata and Karon, the climb to the Big Buddha, and the drive to whichever pier the day's island trip leaves from.
