Is It Worth Renting a Car in Podgorica?

Podgorica was rebuilt after heavy bombing in the Second World War, and it shows: the capital is functional rather than picturesque, and most visitors are through it within a few hours rather than staying for days.

The city center rarely holds people for long

A walk through the main square, the Old Town remnants near the Ribnica river, and a coffee on Hercegovačka street covers most of what Podgorica offers on foot. It's a functional capital, not a destination in itself.

Skadar Lake and Ostrog Monastery pull in opposite directions

Skadar Lake National Park sits south of the city, its wine villages around Rijeka Crnojevića and its boat trips through reed channels reachable in well under an hour. Ostrog Monastery, carved into a sheer cliff face north of the city, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the region, and getting there involves a narrow access road with no practical public transport alternative for most visitors.

Two more things worth knowing

  • The upper monastery at Ostrog has limited parking; arriving early in high season avoids a long uphill walk from an overflow lot.
  • Skadar Lake's water level and bird life change noticeably by season, so a spring visit looks very different from a late-summer one.

The Sozina tunnel changed the coast's distance

Before the tunnel opened, reaching Budva from Podgorica meant a slow mountain pass. Now it's a fairly direct run, and a fair number of visitors treat Podgorica's airport as their real arrival point even when the coast is where they're staying.

Who should skip it, and the mistake worth avoiding

Anyone flying into Podgorica with a pre-booked transfer straight to the coast doesn't need to rent here at all.

The mistake is assuming Ostrog's access road behaves like a normal two-lane mountain road. It narrows sharply near the monastery, and larger vehicles can struggle to pass oncoming traffic on the final stretch — worth checking the car size against that before booking.

Podgorica itself asks little of a visitor. What a rental car actually buys here is Skadar Lake in one direction and Ostrog in the other, with the coast now close enough through the tunnel to make the capital a genuine starting point rather than a stop to pass through.
