Should I Rent an Automatic or Manual Car in Montenegro?

Montenegro is small on a map, but it does not drive like a flat coastal country. A simple route from Kotor to Lovcen can mean hairpins, tight passing points, buses coming downhill, and a line of cars behind you if you hesitate. Around Budva or Kotor in August, traffic can crawl for long stretches, then suddenly climb into a narrow old-town parking area. That is where the transmission starts to matter.

If you drive manual every week, a manual rental is fine. If you learned manual years ago and have barely touched it since, Montenegro is not the best place to refresh the skill.

Automatic is the safer choice for most visitors

For many travelers, especially visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia, and parts of the Middle East, automatic is the default at home. In Montenegro, the rental fleet is more mixed. You can find automatic cars, but the cheapest small cars are often manual, and automatic models may disappear first during the summer rush.

The practical advantage is simple: you remove one source of stress. You can focus on the road, the signs, the scooter squeezing past the line, or the local driver who knows every bend between Cetinje and Kotor. No clutch, no hill starts, no stalling in front of impatient traffic.

There is a catch. A cheaper car stops being cheaper if you burn the clutch, roll back on a hill, or avoid scenic routes because the driving feels tense. If you need an automatic car, book earlier than someone who can drive anything. This is especially true for July and August, but also for Easter, May holidays, and September weekends when the weather is still good.

Automatic economy cars are usually the first category to become expensive. Larger SUVs and crossovers may still be available, but that changes the budget. If the trip already includes mountain drives, a small automatic is often the sweet spot: less stress than a manual, easier to park than a large SUV.
