Is It Worth Renting a Car in Valletta?

Valletta's grid of streets, laid out behind fortress walls by the Knights of St John, is compact enough that a car is more of an obstacle than a convenience once inside them.

The fortified capital is built for walking

St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace and the Upper Barrakka Gardens all sit within the same walled peninsula, and Valletta's few driving lanes are one-way and tightly restricted, with most of the center closed to non-resident traffic.

Mdina and the Three Cities sit just across the water, but differently

Mdina, the walled former capital known for its near-silence after dark, is a short drive inland and worth an evening visit once the day-trip crowds thin out. The Three Cities — Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua — sit directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta and are often reached faster by the harbor ferry than by driving around the water.

Two more things worth knowing

  • Mdina itself bans most vehicles beyond its gates, so a car gets you close, not all the way in.
  • Parking near Valletta's own gates fills early; a park-and-ride approach from just outside the walls tends to work better than trying to park inside.

The south coast and Gozo pull in a different direction

The Blue Grotto and Dingli Cliffs on the south coast, and the Ċirkewwa ferry crossing to Gozo in the north, sit on opposite ends of the island from Valletta — a car is the only practical way to combine both in the same trip.

Who should skip it, and the mistake worth avoiding

A short city stay centered entirely on Valletta's own streets and harbor views doesn't need a car at all.

The mistake is treating the whole island as a single half-day loop. Malta is small on a map, but narrow roads, tight town centers and the Ċirkewwa ferry queue add up, and a route trying to fit Mdina, the south coast and Gozo into one day usually runs late.

Valletta itself rewards walking behind its own walls. A rental car earns its price reaching Mdina after dark, the south coast's cliffs, and the ferry queue to Gozo — three very different directions from the same small capital.
