Is It Worth Renting a Car in Kutaisi?
Kutaisi International sees a steady run of budget flights every week, and most of the passengers clearing its small terminal are already planning to be somewhere else in Georgia by lunchtime.
The city center itself is a walk, not a drive
Bagrati Cathedral sits on a hill overlooking the old town, and the White Bridge over the Rioni River is a five-minute stroll from most central hotels. If a night or two in Kutaisi is bookended by flights, a car mostly sits parked while you cover the center on foot.
Where that changes is the moment Kutaisi becomes a base rather than a stop — and for this part of Georgia, it usually does.
The real reason to rent here: canyons and caves within an hour
Okatse Canyon has a suspended walkway bolted to the cliff face, and Martvili Canyon is toured by small boat along a narrow gorge — both are roughly forty minutes from Kutaisi by different roads, and neither is well connected to the other by public transport. Prometheus Cave, with its lit chambers and underground river, sits on a third route entirely.
Sataplia Nature Reserve, closer to the city and known for its dinosaur footprints and a smaller cave, fits easily into the same kind of half-day loop if the schedule allows.
Two more things worth knowing
- Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO site, is about ten kilometers out and pairs naturally with a Bagrati Cathedral visit on the same day.
- Road signage improves close to the tourist sites but thins out on the connecting stretches, so offline maps help more here than in central Tbilisi.
A natural staging point for the rest of Georgia
Kutaisi sits roughly between Tbilisi and Batumi, and plenty of one-way rentals start or end here for exactly that reason — fly in on a budget carrier, drive the country, fly out from wherever the loop ends. Confirm early whether a one-way drop-off is actually supported, since not every supplier offers it from a secondary airport the way they would from the capital.
Who should skip it, and the mistake people make with timing
A single overnight stay spent entirely in the city center doesn't need a car; walk to Bagrati, cross the White Bridge, and let a taxi handle the airport transfer.
The timing mistake is common: booking a car for the same day as a late-arriving flight and expecting to fit in both Okatse and Martvili before dark. Pick one canyon per afternoon, or push the second to the following day.
Kutaisi itself asks very little of a rental car. The canyons, caves and monasteries scattered around it ask quite a lot — and how many of those you're planning to reach in a short stay is really what decides the question.
